Insert File (not responding)

J

John

Using XP Home with Outlook, whenever I select insert (attach) a file to
an e-mail, INSERT FILE dialog box opens, I click a folder to select the
document to attach, then the system locks up for a few seconds (10
secs.) and the upper corner of the window changes to "INSERT FILE (NOT
RESPONDING)".

I also noticed that I can't save a file in Word anymore or use Open.

Any insights? Everything worked fine the last 3 years until FRI when
an automatic XP update occured.

Thnaks,
John

I am having the same problem. And in Word and Excel, when I use the "save
as," the box where I should click on "save" changes to "open" and won't let
me save it. It just locks up the program. I tried it on someone else's
machine, and the same thing is happening. Sorry I'm not helping, but I was
glad to hear it wasn't just me. Sheri

The exact same thing happened to me. CyndiW has a pretty good post on it
(along with a gazillion others), "Outlook 2003 freezes". She has a link to a
support post that suggests that HP is an issue; it will take braving the
registry editor to fix.

You are not alone.

FWIW, from the Microsoft side a new Knowledge Base Article (KBA) was
released on Apr 15th.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918165

It lists two known conflicts so far.

I made the change to my registry and....it worked!! However, I caution
anyone who braves the wilds of the Windows registry to be careful. Messing
about in the reqistry is not wise. All that said, I found the directions to
be be quite straight forward...except for one thing: Step 6 says to "Set the
Data of this value to 1". It doesn't tell you how. So.....Upon entering the
reeeally long number, hit enter. Then right click the really long number and
select "Modify binary value" (or something like that). All you do is type
"01" and close the box. You will then see the Data value is set at 1.

In any case, I'm up and running....for now.

Changed the registry after lunch. So far so good. Thank goodness for this
community! Sheri
