Insert from Scanner

I have a Canon N650U scanner, drivers for photoshop are installed and
(as Photoshop proves) in good working order.

When I try to scan from word, the twain dialog is started, next I see a
running meter and just when this is at the end (and I presume everything
is scanned) Word suddenly quits and completely disappears from my
screen.

Anyone a solution?

I don't know of a solution, but I do know that TWAIN drivers are a problem.
What does Canon say about it?

I reported this here myself last month. It appears that there is a
definite problem with Word X's Twain Support.

Only workaround is to scan using a different Twain compatible
application (Photoshop or Graphic Converter, for example), then import
it into Word using Insert->Picture->From File...
