Insert/Hyperlink menu disabled

The menu - Insert/Hyperlink - is disabled on my powerpoint
and I can not figure out how to enable it. Currently I
can not insert hyperlinks into any of my slide shows.
I've checked all of the Tools/Options and other relevant
looking menus and I can't seem to find a setting to enable
this menu. Am I missing something? ANy help would be
greatly appreciated.

first, you must type the words that you want hyperlinked. then, with the
text box you just created selected, the Insert Hyperlink should now work.
It is gray if you have not yet told it what you want to hyperlink
