"Insert Hypertext" Menu does Not Open

Had this posted under General with no luck. Reposting here with high hopes.

On a Windows XP Professional computer (SP2) using Word 2003 SP2.
The full Microsoft Office Professional Edition is installed as an upgrade to
2002.

The Problem:
In Word, if I type a hyperlink into a document, Word will not format it as a
hyperlink even though the AutoCorrect options are set to replace "Internet
and network paths with hyperlinks" in both AutoFormat and AutoFormat as You
Type. Text strings beginning with "www" or "http://" will NOT register as
links.

If I go to the "Insert" menu and choose "Hyperlink," nothing happens. It's
as if that menu command is disconnected. Ctrl-K also will not bring up the
Insert Hyperlink window.

Any ideas how to get hyperlinks functioning agian? Or how to get the Insert
Hyperlinks menu back?

Rebuilt the PC. This hyperlink problem in Word 2003 was caused by the
installation of Yahoo Messenger 5.0.0. If Messenger 5.0 is installed, it
breaks the HTML/Hyperlink functions of Office 2003. Outlook and Excel also
have issues inserting/creating and following links when Yahoo Messenger 5.0
is installed. I'm not sure if the latest version of Yahoo Messenger (7.5)
causes the same issue. I'm also not sure if simply removing the Yahoo
Messenger application restores Office's ability to create and recognize
hyperlinks as a de-install was not an option in my environment.
