Insert & link a Word doc into Excel 07 - error message

I am using Insert tab/Object button/Browse to a Word document, then selecting
Link to File. The error message 'Cannot insert object' appears. If I do NOT
select 'Link to File' the document comes in OK. I have tried the same
procedure with other Word docs and even a Powerpoint doc, but the same error
message appears and I am left with just an empty frame on the worksheet. This
is the first time I've tried to do this in Excel.

Any suggestions welcome
