Insert/Link isn't a link

I was experimenting with the Insert/Link function to insert a text file into
a Word Document, but it isn't inserting a link, it's inserting the actual
text. It will insert a true link for a picture (the picture will change if
the external picture changes), but not for a text file (the text will NOT
change if the external file changes, and the master file size increases). Is
this how Insert/Link is supposed to work?
