OK, *this* "I'm <pasting> a linked chart" is completely different from "I
can't seem to <insert> a linked chart"
Paste Special> Link as any type of
object seems to have its share of problems right now. MS is aware of the
issue but no fix has been supplied as yet. It's also a bit of a conundrum
because the problem manifests itself in different ways, which makes it all
the more difficult to troubleshoot. For example:
I just retested on an Intel MBP running Leopard 10.5.0, Office 12.0.1
copying a [very] basic chart from Excel & used both Paste Special> MS Excel
Chart Object and as Picture without crashing Excel. As MS Office Graphic
Object was a no-go altogether supplying a dialog "Word cannot obtain the
data for the Excel.Sheet.12 link" - but still no crash.
Although the first two methods didn't crash Excel they weren't altogether
successful, either, and both caused the chart in Excel to be only partially
displayed. No amount of refresh effort would resolve it, but closing the
file & reopening redrew the chart sheet with no problem. Also, it goes
flawlessly if the Excel file is not open when pasting the link. You might
try that.
One other option - which is what I took from your first post - is Insert>
Object> From File, but the Chart must be the only sheet in the workbook or
must be the *displayed* sheet when the file is saved & closed as well as any
time you update the link.
From another direction you can copy the data to be plotted, then use Insert>
Object> MS Graph Chart, Paste the data in as a Link.
