Insert>Object

Hi,

In my home office, I am running Word 2001 on a beige Macintosh G3,
utilizing the OS9 operating system.

When attempting to either link or embed a PDF file into a Word
document, using the Insert>Object command -- the PDF having been
created in Acrobat version 5.0 -- I keep getting the following error
message:

"The server application, source file, or item cannot be found. Make
sure the application is properly installed, and that it has not been
deleted, moved, or renamed."

I am not "guilty" of any of the "accusations" in the above
message. I am able to successfully link and embed objects from other
applications.

Please inform me how to rectify this issue. I know the
linking-embedding command can be accomplished on a PDF because I tried
it at a computer lab in a Windows environment with success.

In fact, an interesting thing to note is that a Word document with a
PDF embedded as an icon that I created at the lab opens in my home
office, but double-clicking the PDF icon within the document at home
does not open the PDF. Instead I get this error message:

"Word cannot edit the AcroExch.Document.7"

I look forward to your response. Thank you!

I can't say I've ever tried, but I would say you probably can't insert
a PDF into a Word document ... or at least not with Word 2001. The PC
version may be newer and have that ability, and perhaps the Mac
versions of Office vX and Office 2004 version can too (but they need
Mac OS X).

Since you've got Acrobat, you could open up the PDF and export the
pages as individual TIFF or JPEG images (at around 150dpi for colour
and 300dpi for black/white) and then insert those into a Word document.
I do that for community newsletter adverts that have to be sent as Word
documents, but it is a pain and can make a HUGE Word document if you've
got a lot of pages in the original PDF.

Hi Kath,

Word is not especially adept at handling PDF files. You would be better
off inserting a picture or drawing object or selecting some text and use
the hyperlink command to link to the PDF document. That way MacOS will
open the PDF file using the application that is set to handle PDF files
on your computer.

You need to distribute both the PDF and the Word document together.
Before you link the two, be sure to save the Word document and the PDF
together into the same exact folder. Distribute the folder, not the
individual documents.
