insert or embedded images are automatically resized smaller

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Power PC
Email Client: pop

I notice - and it is not all the time so I am not sure how and why and when it decides to do it - that when I drag an image and drop it into an email I am writing (or use Insert > Picture), the image gets resized in my email preview pane. And the resize is always smaller.

how and why and is there a way to stop this?

it gets to be an issue if I am wanting to look at the image and describe a section or area of it, but it is now so small, I cannot fully see it.
