Insert / Overwrite behaving odly.

I've noticed this for a while and it's starting to bug me.

I am not able to overwrite highlighted (selected) text in any of the Office
XP applications. The behaviour is as if the text is not selected, e.g I
select a sentence, begin to type and instead of the selected text
disappearing, the new text is just inserted before it.

what am I missing?

My guess is "Tools, Options, Edit, "Typing replaces selection" needs to
be toggled ON".
