insert page numbers for each section

I have completed a mail merge of labels (Avery 5160 - 30 address labels per
page) and now have one page and 326 sections. I need to insert page numbers
for each section but when I try to do so it moves the section page down so
last 3 labels of each page is on next page. Tried to do it with
"Header/Footer" but I am dong something wrong and each section page is
numbered one - advice please - thanks

As long as you can fit the page numbers in the space available you should be
OK, but do not use the Insert page Number button on the Header/Footer
toolbar as it inserts a textbox that you don't need.

Once you have opened the header/footer, use ctrl-F9 to insert a pair of the
special field code braces {} , then type the SECTION between them so you end
up with

{ SECTION }

This inserts the section number rather than the page number (which will
always be 1 as you have noticed). Format the code however you need it - if
it changes font or size after the merge, change the code to

{ SECTION \*Charformat } and ensure that the " S" are formatted the way you
need.

You should do that in the Mail merge Main document, then do the merge or you
may find yourself having to insert the { SECTION } field into every single
section :)

Thank you for your prompt response. I am doing something wrong but I do not
know what. I opened Header/Footer toolbar and inserted a textbox, could not
get ctrl-F9 to work so manually typed in { SECTION } but it is appearing on
each page and also "forcing" last row of 3 address labels on to next page
where they stand alone - help please

1. Don't insert a textbox. If you need to position the section number
horizontally, either tabs (e.g. Format|Tabs) or make the paragraph left,
centre, or right-aligned if one of those suits. For vertical layout, use
Format|Paragraph to adjust the space above/below and Format|Font to adjust
the size of the number.

2. You have to use the special field code braces - you can't just type them.
If you can't get ctrl-F9 to work, try Inset|Field and select the Section
field.

This is almost certainly a consequence of trying to fit too much on the
page, and/or a question of how close your printer can print to the top and
bottom of the page. It may be difficult to insert /anything/ above/below the
labels without having problems, but I think if you succeed with (a) and (2)
you may have a chance.
