insert picture always defaults to default file location

I'm new to this list, looking for a little help. I have a user who is
experiencing some strange Word behavior. He's using Word 2002 SP2. If
he has to insert multiple images into a document, every time he selects
Insert | Picture | From File, the screen that opens displays the
contents of whatever folder is listed as the default on the Tools |
Options | File Locations tab.

On other users (using the same version and service pack), if you're
working on the same document and change the location to something other
than the default file location, you will remain in that other folder
until you close Word (or possibly, start a new document).

Can anyone help me?

Installation default is no path for graphics in Tools/Options/File
locations. Are you sure the other users have something set for this? Or
is it empty?

That would explain the difference between behavior on your machine and mine.
I can't testify as to the default because my copy of Office XP was installed
by Dell, but the path for "Clipart pictures" on my File Locations tab is My
Documents\My Pictures.

You *can* change the default location of your pictures by modifying the path
at Tools | Options | File Locations. But the default location of pictures
has nothing to do with the Insert | File command: you still have to choose
From File, Clip Art, From Scanner or Camera, etc.

Are you saying there is no way to change the default? I'd
like the default to be "from file", if it's possible.

If what you're looking for is a quicker way to display the Insert Picture dialog
box you could assign the InsertPicture command to a toolbar button or keyboard
short cut:
1. Tools/Customize/Commands (/Keyboard)
2. Category: All commands
3. Drag InsertPicture to the toolbar or menu of your choice (or assign a keyboard
shortcut)

If what you really mean is to change the file location where InsertPicture goes
by default, the following will work with most versions of Word. Just change the
path to the one you prefer in the second line

Sub InsertPicFromFile()
SendKeys "C:\{Enter}"
With Dialogs(wdDialogInsertPicture)
.Show
End With
End Sub

I think my original post was confusing. To try to clarify:

Yes, the default File Location for images listed within the Tools |
Options menu has been set to something other than what it shipped with.
It's standard procedure for me to assign that default directory to the
main images directory on our server whenever I configure a new system.
All the computers in this building are set that way and that's not a
problem. Even on the machine in question, that part of the procedure
works properly.

Let me try to explain the problem this way: I've got my default File
Location for images within the Tools |Options menu set to
Z:\Images\2003. I'm going to insert two images from the
Z:\Images\2003\JobXXX folder into my new Word document. I click on
Insert | Picture | From File. The screen that comes up is currently
browsing within Z:\Images\2003 (the default directory I've set). So
far, so good. I browse deeper to the Z:\Images\2003\JobXXX folder and
insert my first image. Life is good. Time to insert the second image.
This is where it all goes pear shaped. I click on Insert | Picture |
From File. The screen that comes up is currently browsing the
Z:\Images\2003 folder (the default directory I've set). And that right
there is the problem. On any of my other computers the screen that
comes up would have been browsing the Z:\Images\2003\JobXXX folder
because that's the folder I was just in.

I've tried repairing the installation, deleting the Normal.dot, and
uninstalling/reinstalling.

Anyone have any suggestions?

have described is the default behavior that most of us observe. In Word 2002
and above, you can add the desired folder to your Places Bar for one-click
access.

Thanks for your prompt reply, but I have to believe that you can chang
this "default". Out of 50+ users, only one user is experiencing thi
behavior. There must be some way to "un-default" this behavior fo
this single black sheep.

This isn't just a minor annoyance for him. His efficiency is down an
his frustration is way up. When you write 25 reports a day and each o
those reports has 10 - 50 pictures each, inserting images is a larg
part of your job. Right now he's manually changing the default Fil
Location (under Tools | Options) every time he starts a new report s
that he can work normally.

If you have any insight. It would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I wish I knew how to change it, too. If you can tell me what's
different about the machines that are doing it "right," I'd love to know.
Could it have to do with the update status? I have not applied any of the
service packs for Office XP because I'm about to upgrade to Office 2003, so
that might make a difference.
