Nuts, I hate those vague error messages! Unfortunately, that "encountered a
problem and must close" doesn't give us much info.

Hm...

How are you inserting the pictures? How about the video clips?

Do you have any add-ins running?

Yes I agree with those messages. I am just doing the insert picture, insert
video, and it has worked like a charm until boom. I inserted video and the
about 10 minutes later did the insert picture and I've had it ever since. I
am sorry but I'm not that techinical so I am not sure what you mean by add

don't have any running. Thank you for your help.

Lynda,
I have a string of questions for you. I am hoping that one of the answers
can get us to somewhere we can find an answer.
- Was there anything unusual about the video you inserted just before the
problem inserting pictures started?
- Can you insert clip art without PPT dying?
- Is there anything in common between the pictures you are trying to insert?
- Does the error occur in all presentations? What about if you create a
brand new presentation and try to insert something?
- Can you add an autoshape to the presentation and change the fill to one of
your pictures without PPT dying?
- Can you change the background of your slide without PPT dying?

I know, lots of questions... But hopefully one of them will point us in the
right direction....

Thanks Kathy, two "different" things happened when just before this problem
started. but first to weed out your questions. Yes I can insert clip art, can
add autoshape and can change background all without PPT crashing. The insert
picture works on all PPT old and new.

The two "different" things: one was I inserted a Mpeg2 720 x 480 video
rather than what I normally do which is use Mpeg 1 352 x 240. The video would
not work (ie play automatically when slide comes up), so I deleted it and
then inserted the 352 x 240 and it works. About 2 hours later, I tried to
save a PPT from a 2003 to a lesser version - it froze the screen, I had to
Alt/ Delete and to free my computer.

So there is my PPT life in a nutshell. I appreciate your help.

Okay, so you can insert pictures, you just can't insert MPEG2 videos?

In that case, it may just be that you don't have the MPEG2 codec available.

I think what I'd do in your shoes is just download and install PFCMedia from
http://www.pfcmedia.com There's a free 2-week trial you can use to get
things going. It will convert your MPEG2 to a more compatible file format
and insert it on the slide for PPT to show.

Also, you might want to skip the "save to a lesser version." All versions of
PPT from 97 through 2003 can open the same files. If you "backsave," you are
just adding the option to open the file with PPT 95. And unless you're
working with someone who's using PPT 95 and so needs the backsave in order
to open the file, you're really just introducing potential problems into the
file. Just do a regular save, and you should be fine.

Sorry Echo S, I was just providing activity that happened before I had the
insert picture issue - I CAN insert video (after the first crash, video is
fine) but after that crash and trying to save to the lesser versions, this is

but Austin asked about video so that is why I gave that background. So bottom

I am confused. (But that isn't unusual.) In the response to me you say you
can insert pictures, but here you say you can't.
Response to me:
Response below:
line, I'm still Sc...wed with insert picture.

The other thing I am confused about: Is the error happening when you save or
when you close? If it happens when you close the presentation, what happens
if you save and then close? Does the error occur? Finally, what happens if
you save the presentation, close the presentation, then close PPT? Can you
open the presentation and see your changes, or does the error wipe out your
changes?

What I am trying to get at - if you take a brand new presentation and use
insert picture from file to add a picture, then immediately save the
presentation and close ppt - does that work or does PPT error off? If it
works, then the next step is to create another new presentation and insert
something you know usually causes the failure - save that and close ppt -
does the error happen?

I am also curious: Why are you trying to save to the older version? Does
the error occur if you don't save to the older version?

Finally if saving after inserting some pictures causes the error and saving
after inserting other pictures doesn't cause the error, what is different
between the two pictures?

Hi Echo
Message is
"Microsoft Office Powerpoint has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience."
Very obscure message wouldn't you say? I have tried the repair option then
reinstalled PPT (Office 2003 Pro)
Same problem. Problem is it used to insert pictures. Then, one day, poof.
No more insert. I can copy and paste fine, but can't insert. Registry
problem?

Yeah, that's a pretty useless error message. Sheesh.

I can't think of what would prevent you from inserting pictures. Or, rather,
what would cause PPT to crash when you go to insert a picture.

Hmmm. Have you closed PPT and deleted your *.PCB file? (You could actually
just rename the extension if you want.) *.PCB is your PPT toolbar, and PPT
will rebuild it the next time you start it.

Also, just to double-check, can you do a search on your harddrive for *.PPA
files? As you know, those are PPT add-ins, and I know you deleted them, but
it's probably worth double-checking.

Oh, what if you change hardware acceleration? It sounds odd, but I've seen
stranger things work!

What kind of images are you trying to insert? Does PPT crash on all of
them -- PNG, JPG and TIF?

I am curious if this ever got resolved? I'm having the same problem. One
day inserting a picture was fine, the next day..nope. I can copy and paste a
picture but can't insert a picture. I've deleted any add-ins and still no
fix. Any ideas out there?
Thanks

Have you ran Detect and Repair? If not that would be my first suggestion.

In PowerPoint 2003, when I insert a picture I get an Error

and
then
the software closes. Now I can not insert any pictures or video clips as
it
just keeps giving me the error and then closes. Can someone help

HI Echo
meetings, meetings, and more meetings! Now, to get back to this problem.
I can't find ANY *.pcb files none, zippo. No *.ppa files. No *.pip files
(referring to a previous discussion on toolbars.)
Typically I import *.PNG files, but bmp and sometimes jpeg in the process.
I changed the graphics acceleration, no good.
The toolbars must exist 'somewhere' but where?
Thanks
