I am merging a mulipage letter. On each page of the letter i would like the
same picture a (location map) to appear on the bottom half. How can I do
this so that the image is inserted as part of the mail merge for creating the
letter? eg I would like to put into the mail merge box the name of the
picture eg 9999 then the picture would appear on each page the merge criteria
appears. With the next letter put in a different ref 9998 and a different
picture appears.

You can do this with an INCLUDEPICTURE field. In your mail merge main
document, insert picture 9999 using Insert | Picture | From File: Link to
File. Press Alt+F9 to view the field code Word uses. Then, for the 9999 part
of the file path, substitute a merge field referring to the data source
field that contains the picture number. The resulting merge document will
have linked pictures. You can unlink them by selecting the entire document
and pressing Ctrl+Shift+F9 (note that this will also unlink any other fields
in the document, such as date fields).
