Insert scanned file

I'm learning and working at using Word 2003 and Publisher 2003 to develop an
eBook about 200 to 250 pages. It's a memoir. I have an original telegram
sent to my parents June 11, 1968 that I've scanned and filed. I'm at a point
in my document where I want to insert the telegram as it was scanned and then
continue on writing my story. Can someone advise me on how to do this in
Word 2003?

Moreover, as stated, I'm also using Publisher 2003, but I'm more ignorant of
Publisher than Word, and I don't know at this point if 1) I should be using
either Publisher or Word, 2) if I can produce in Word and later transfer the
document to Publisher, or 3) If there's a way between Word and Publisher to
take my scanned file and insert it where I want it in either Word and/or
Publisher.

Bottom line: I want to produce an eBook of a memoir. I'm using Word 2003
and Publisher 2003. I don't know if I need both softwares or if they
complement each other and how I might work an insertion of a scanned file
into my ebook whether it be into Word 2003 or Publisher 2003. The end is I
want to have an eBook when all is written and done with such effects as
inserted scanned files. Please help.

If you have a *lot* of pictures and your ebook will look more like a
coffeetable book than a novel, use Publisher.

For the occasional graphic, you should be fine with Word.

I'm not very good with graphics, but ideally, you scanned the telegram into
a graphics/photo program, you did all the cleaning up and resizing in that
program, and now you can just drag and drop it into Word where you want it.

However, since it can be tricky to get graphics where you want them, it's
actually probably going to make your life simpler, if possible, to add the
graphics after all editing is complete.

Not really, because I don't use Windows.

Adobe Photoshop, but that's way more expensive than you need. But perhaps
that shows you what I mean? I guess Adobe Elements is another?

I think Windows might come with a MS Picture Manager or Photo Manager, that
might do.

Whatever you used to scan the telegram probably works--generally, anything
that saves the scan as a jpg or a gif or other graphic format. You may not
need to do any resizing or cleanup--I just wanted to make the point that
it's not a good idea to try to use Word as a graphics program, if you can
avoid it. Word will let you crop an inserted image, for instance, but really
it's better not to. I think you *can* scan directly into Word, but then
you've got a picture inside a Word .doc, and it's better to have the actual
picture file (as .jpg or .gif for example).

But I accidentally hit Send too early.
