I've customized my toolbars and would like to add a new separator between some of the groups of commands. Is it possible to do that?

As long as its a toolbar that can be un-docked (floating), un-dock it then
Control-click the button to the right of where you want a separator. Choose
Properties from the shortcut menu & put a check in the Begin a Group box.

I just figured out a nifty trick to do with this. If you want to customize the icon for a command that doesn't have an icon or start a group on the standard toolbar (which can't be modified this way), first create the command however you want on the floating toolbar, as described above. Then dock that toolbar and right-click on the toolbars and choose "Customize toolbars and menus..." You can now drag your customized command from its current toolbar to the standard toolbar, and it will retain its properties.

If you're going to customize the default toolbars in any significant way you
should also keep a current backup of the Normal template. If there's ever a
need to restore/replace it the customizations will not be included - you'll
need the Normal.dotm to import them from.

Also - it's too early to tell in 2008 - but there's been concern in the past
that modifying the built-in toolbars may contribute to program errors.

Just to clarify, though -- there's no reason you can't create a new toolbar,
copy over from the Standard toolbar all the default buttons you want to use,
close the Standard toolbar (for good) and add the new button to the new
toolbar.

Caveat: I'm in Word 2004; this may not be the case in Word 2008, so it's
best to await confirmation by my learned, adventurous colleagues...

Hello Clive -

The advice is sound as always, but the unfortunate limitation is that the
custom toolbars in 2008 can't be made dock-able within the doc window - IOW
you can't *replace* the Standard toolbar physically with a custom bar :-(

Aaargh!!! I'm going to say it, Elliott* -- Word 2004 was such an
improvement on its successor!

(Thanks, Bob!)
