Insert Symbol feature crashing Word 2002

I tried using the insert symbol feature today for the
first time in over a year and found it no longer works.
It causes the infamous "Microsoft Word has encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience." popup to appear. I tried the repair
feature on Word without success. Can anyone help out on
this problem?

This is often a sign of a damaged printer driver. Try deleting the printer
and reinstalling it.

Possibly the graphics needs a new driver but also it may be a corrupt Symbol
font. Try removing that and reimporting it.
