Insert Symbol Problem

There may a very simple solution for this problem but I don't know what it
is. This problem suddenly appeared... now whenever I use Insert Symbol in
one of my documents, the symbols in any of the fonts now do not respond. The
Special Characters work but not the Fonts or Recently Used Symbols. Did I
change a setting somewhere by mistake? Thanks for any help.

If you can click on Insert | Symbol, and see the symbols, but cannot
select one, then it's usually because the x-mouse feature in TweakUI is
enabled.
