Insert Symbol = Word 2002 dies

DJ

Run Win XP on PC and have Office Pro 2002.

When using Word, I try to 'Insert' / 'Symbol' (e.g. arrow
or copyright symbol) and word dies. Receive fatal error
box. Sends error report. Tries to recover doc. Error
signature points to winword.exe.

Have tried uninstall and reinstall to no avail.
Any suggestions? BTW - insert - symbol works fine in
other office apps (e.g. Powerpoint).

Do you have a lot fonts installed? Have you applied the latest Service Pack
and patches for Office 2002?

Yes, I do have many (probably too many) fonts installed.
I have installed the latest/greatest patches for XP,
Office, etc.

Could this be related to fonts? If so I will gladly
uninstall them.

Maybe but far more likely is the printer driver. Check at the Internet
support site for the printer and download the latest driver (if you aren't
already using it). Then go to Printers & Faxes and delete the printer.
Reinstall it using Add Printer and test again.

Chances are all you need to do is delete a corrupt Registry key. Exit Word
in the Registry drill down to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\List Gallery Presets

And delete the List Gallery Presets key. This key will be recreated upon
restarting Word.

As always, prior to making any changes to the Registry you should review
"Backing up the Registry" and "Restoring the Registry" in the
Registry Help.

In this situation you may also want to use the Registry/Export Registry file
command and export your selected branch. That way if you find the change
wasn't necessary or incorrect you can merge the deleted branch back to the
Registry by double-clicking the resulting file.

This fixed the exact same problem in Word 2002 for me. It wouldn't crash
when logged in as the local admin but it would as the user. Delete it when
logged in as the user.
