insert symbol

I've had this computer about 6 weeks. In the beginning I
could insert any symbol I wanted to. But for several
weeks when I open the insert window, a symbol is
highlighted, and I can't highlight any other by clicking.
If I click on the special characters tab, I click on any
of those and insert them. I can use the arrow keys to
move to a different symbol some of the time. Sometimes
when I use the arrow keys instead of moving to another
symbol, it will go special characters, or to one of the
other buttons on the symbols tab. If I click on one of
the other tabs, it stays highlighted and the arrow keys
move those options. I have to go to special characters
and back to symbols, then the highlight is back on a
symbol.
I just opened a new document and brought up the symbols
screen and at first I could go from symbol to symbol by
clicking. I could insert any symbol by double clicking
and then it just stopped, clicking did nothing. I went
back to the document to move the insertion point and when
I went back to the symbol screen, it was froze up. I went
back to the document and back to symbol and it worked. As
of right now it seems to be working.
Am I doing something wrong, or do I need to change a
setting, OR...???

This problem has been reported when running Word 2002 (XP) with TweakUI and x-mouse. Turning off x-mouse may fix the problem.

It appears that that has solved my problem. Thank you!

This is happening to me also, but it seems that if you let the focus go to the "Insert Symbol" dialog box when in x-mouse mode before clicking anywhere the locking-up behaviour does not occur (I do not have the "Autoraising" feature set in TweakUI). I also noticed that since I had a dual-display arrangment with the main Word window on the secondary display, and the "Symbol" dialog box on the main display, if I moved the mouse from the Word window to the "Symbol" dialog box it would lock up, but if I moved focus to another window on the primary display and then back to the "Symbol" dialog box and let it sit there past the "Activation delay" time in TweakUI/Mouse property you could click on symbols as you would have expected.

If I have the "Symbol" dialog box on the same display as the Word window, I need to put the mouse on top of another application window let it get focus, then move the cursor back to the "Symbol" dialog box and things work OK.

The bottom line seems to be the interaction between the Word window and the "Symbol" dialog box when x-mouse mode is set, but it you use another application window to take the focus from Word and then move the mouse to the "Symbol" dialog box to get focus things seem to work OK. I had set the "Activation delay" to 500 ms on my system (XP Home).

I really like the x-mouse focus feature of TweakUI, so hated to give it up and kept playing with the behaviur oddities until I say a pattern of behaviour. Let me know if this helps out your problem too. Good Luck...
