Insert Symbol

Help...when I try and insert a symbol in a Word doc
(insert > symbol), the document stops, wants to send an
error report to Microsoft, and then recovers my document
after shutting down. I cannot insert any symbol because
of it. I have run "detect and repair" and it has not
fixed the problem. Any suggestions on how to fix this
permanently?

how do i call up normal.dot? i put that in the file name
when i tried to open it and nothing came up. i also
searched for it and nothing was there.
