insert symbols problem in many files

*on july 11 2006, around 90%(guessing) of my company work microsoft word
files, alot, on a dell computer, mysteriously and erroneously had all their
ok column checkmark symbols switched to the number 4. i didn't open open up
these many(hundreds possibly) files and do the insert symbol switch from
checkmark to 4, my company never uses 4 in this ok column. each of these
files-file pages contained many checkmarks in an ok column row box.
*my work company computer tech dept. suggested posting this because they
don't know what caused this and how to solve it, other than manually redoing
the insert symbol switch from 4 to checkmark in each file-file pages, which
would take way too much of my time and what is preventing this from happening
again? also, this corruption can only be seen on my computer, including
printouts, and not on anyone elses computer when their viewing or printing
out these files? i suggested reloading these files on my computer to my tech
dept., but the tech guy said that would be too much of a problem right
now-limited time etc. and would like to try to figure out this problem etc..
*is there one default symbol setting etc. when changed that would effect all
word files in one folder or on a computer-any explanations and answers would
be greatly appreciated-thanks very much-have a super week-godspeed ahead!!!

This is a really strange and new sort of spam. It's difficult to
read because of the absence of capitals or any real punctuation
and it's posted under several different subject headings. Even
if it may describe a real problem, I certainly can't see myself
plowing thro' it.

*sorry for these same posts, i just signed up for this and i am new at this
all since last night. last night, i deleted some of these posts from my
profile account but i still see they are erroneously still posted as of
now???
*also, last night, sometimes even after an hour or so after posting, i
couldn't find my posts when searching in the main searchbox under get answers
from other users while "under the search categories of office or word" which
all these posts of mine fall under these search categories, so i thought i
better repost to be sure it wasn't lost etc.. later "by acccident", i
"somehow found" that even though i couldn't find my posts by searching the
way as i just stated above, i was able to find my posts by opening up a post
in my profile account and then do a search from this search box "under the
same search categories of office or word"??? this sounds like something isn't
working correctly with this service as there is no info i was given or read
when i opened my account last night about this unusual searching behaviour of
this service???
***the main search box under get answers from other users doesn't appear to
be working correctly, as my understanding per this service info, is that
after 5 minutes after i post, this post of mine should post, and this post of
mine should be able to be searched which was not the case last night as i
stated above and also when i deleted some of these posts in my profile
account last night they are still posted today???
