To insert a text box help says go to INSERT then click TEXT BOX. It's just
there appears to be NO TEXT BOX to click. Am I going crazy?

Hi Ken,

No, you are not crazy. You are absolutely on the money. The help topic is
just wrong. You can report this error by sending feedback to Microsoft using
the feedback option on the help menu. It's quite possible that someone from
Microsoft will find this thread and make a note in the bug database, so it's
not terribly urgent that you take the time to report this.

Now to actually get you a text box or two.

I occasionally make text boxes, so I keep the drawing toolbar visible (View
menu > Toolbars > Drawing). There's a textbox button on that toolbar.

If you use textboxes a whole lot then you can use Tools menu > Customize and
drag the text box command to any menu or toolbar. You can also make a
keyboard shortcut to make text boxes if you like.

Thanks Jim

Workarounds were fine - thanks for your help - took me a little time to work
out how to get rid of the border - funny it wasn't through 'borders'! Have
only recently switched to mac and although I'm familiar with excel etc on
windows it is taking a little time to get used to the quirks. Thanks again. It's
surprising how much time I can spend on a small problem like that.

Hi again,

Once you format a text box you can set the formatting as the default for all
future text boxes in the document. Just control-click (or right-click if you
have a multi-button mouse) and choose from the pop-up menu "Set Autoshape
Defaults."

In Excel you'll find context sensitive menus for just about everything when
you control-click on things.
