Inserted objects don't display

Any objects (charts, pictures, hyperlinks, TOC entries, captions tec.) do not
display. Instead of the text or picture that should appear, a description
such as the following appears in it's place:

{ EMBED Excel.Chart.8\s }

These objects print as they should, but do not display. I have unchecked the
'Picture Placeholders' option already.

Can anyone help please?

In Word 2003 or earlier, click on Tools | Options | View tab | uncheck
the boxes for "All", "Hidden text", and "Field codes" | Print tab |
uncheck the boxes for "Hidden text" and "Field codes" | OK.

Press Alt+F9 to toggle the display from field codes (what you're seeing) to
field results.
