Inserted picture flashing on and off

WD 2003 question. My organisation uses GIS, ie maps, a lot and inserts
formatted ones into MS Word documents. I'm trying to repair one that has two
large maps one after the other in a six-page doc. The first looks fine in its
frame fitting on its page, but the second flashes like a strobe light when in
Print layout View. In Normal view you can see both maps sitting on their pair
of pages as good as gold.

I've inserted page breaks before and after where Map 2 is, and I've resized
it to be way smaller than the page (it was twice as big as the page and the
handles were dragged in to make it fit), but I cannot think of a rationale
for this to happen.

Googling the question gave me one possibility: a Norton AV dialogue box open
behind the app, but we don't use that and the flashing travels from computer
to computer, so it's in the file. Please would you suggest another reason?

As a follow-on, I'm aware that if two graphics overlap, and both have been
set to Layout: Square rather than Layout: In Line With Text, one may
interfere with the other and you'll see a large slab of white across the
picture. In this case the maps have pretty frames drawn around them and they
are effectively nested in cells of a table. When you look at the electronic
file in the usual Print Layout View you see the first map completely, but the
second is jumping about, but if in Normal View, both pictures look stable. If
you actually print it you will see both framed pictures, but only the top
centimeter or so of each map within its frame! I got rid of the problem by
removing the nested frames and ended with two full-page pictures that looked
and printed fine.

I would still be glad of an explanation though ...
