Inserted pictures appear as an X rather than the picture.

When inserting a picture into PowerPoint, it appears as an X and the picture
doesn't show. The picture format is .jpg. I e-mailed the picture to someone
else. When she inserted it into PowerPoint, it worked for her and didn't
appear as an X. It sounds like a setting problem on my machine. Any
suggestions?
