Inserted pictures not appearing in slide show

I am working in PowerPoint 97, in Windows 2000.
In a presentation that is mostly inserted pictures, when
running the slide show (no animations, timed fixed
transitions) some of the pictures do not appear. The
missing pictures appear to be random - I can run the
presentation again and the missing ones will appear and
others will be missing. The slide view and the slide
sorter view are intact and correct.
Any ideas?
