inserting a callout using Word 2002

I'm trying to insert callouts to label parts of a command line. This worked easily in my Word 95 program, but I cannot figure out how to make it work in Word 2002.

I am selecting Autoshapes, Callouts, and then a callout shape. Then I click the part of the command I want to label with a callout. I planned to drag to where I want the callout text to appear. I expected this to create the callout line and open a text box where I could type in the text.

Instead, a big "insert graphic here" box appeared where I wanted to start the callout line. It split the command text I was trying to label. I clicked inside the "insert graphic here" box, hoping to drag it out of the way and a callout shape appeared inside the box.

What you describe is the drawing canvas. Its use is explained in Windows
help under "Arranging, aligning, and distributing graphics". You can turn
it off from tools > options > general if you don't need it.
