Inserting a comment eliminates highlight.

I use both highlighting and comment boxes when editing student papers. But in 2008 the comment insertions eliminate the highlighting. So when I want to make the comment fit the whole highlighted area it erases the highlighting, but inserting it at a specific point erases the highlighting of a single word, which makes it look like I'm calling attention to that specific word. Is there any fix to this, or a way to let the highlighting still tint the comment insertion point?

Interesting!

Word 2008 changed from Word 2004 in that it now highlights the text that
is associated with a comment, as well as putting brackets around it. In
general, this is a good thing, as it makes it *far* easier to follow
where a comment belongs (it's also a return to earlier versions, which
used the highlight with no bracket to mark commented text).

In fact, 2008 is not so much removing your highlighting as overriding it
with the Special Comment Highlighting--in my test, the pale blue
highlight from the comment is still there, but it overrode my yellow
highlighting. Word won't let me override the special comment
highlighting, and you can't control how the comments are marked to
remove the highlighting, as far as I can tell. Doesn't look like there
is any way to make the two highlights match.

Best workaround I can find--selecting a single space before inserting
the comment gets you a narrow double bracket, and I'm sure your students
will realize it's just an anchor for the comment, not singling out that
space.

I'm curious about your editing method--What do you use highlighting for?
