Inserting a excel table into word error

Hello,
I have been working on this for about a week now and I am at a loss. Word 07
will not allow me to insert and excel table into a word doc. When I try I get
a error similar to:

The program needed to perform the is operation is Excel. Install the program
and retry.

I get this error if I try to insert the table through the tabl drop box or
the insert object drop box. Any way possible, I get it.

I have Excel 07 so I am wodnering why it will not let me. I thought DDE was
the problem but it is not ignored through excel so I do not know what is
going on. I believe it may be a registry setting but I am not sure where to
look. I also uninstalled and reinstalled everything and still get it. Any
help is greatly appreciated.

Okay, I installed excel 03 on my machine that also has office 07 and word
will insert the table. However, I do not want excel 03 on my system. I want
it to work correctly with excel 07. I need some help please. Here is the
excat error:

"The program used to create this object is Excel. That program is not
installed on your computer. To edit this object, you must install a program
that can open the object."

Don't blame just Office 2007. I have had several variations of this
problem on multiple machines with both Office 2007 and prior versions
for several years now. So far, none of the very helpful MVP's here or
anyone at Microsoft seems to have an answer. I have actually paid for
a support session from MS on this and they came up empty. In my
experience, this is a timing issue where Word periodically checks to
see if Excel is there and confirm the links work or to refresh them.
If some other process is hogging the CPU cycles at the moment, the
check times out and the link "fails", and you get the error message in
Word. In many cases, I just ignore the warning, close it and keep
working. Most of the time, the link magically works again later with
no action on my part.

The most frustrating version of this issue is when you save the file
while the link is not available, and then the embedded table is saved
as a static "picture" of what was there when the link died. When you
click on the table again, Word gives you the image editing tab on the
ribbon instead of the Excel home tab.

An interim anomaly is when the table appears linked, and Word sends up
no flags indicating problems, but anything you type into the Excel
table types in fine and then disappears when you click back into the
basic Word text. If you go back into the table, the text reappears.
The new text will NOT print, no matter what section of the document
you are in when you print it. You can save it or not save it and get
the same results. To fix this issue, I have to open a new instance of
the template I use ( the same one as the one that does not work
anymore ) copy and paste my information, and everything works fine in
the new copy B4 & after a save. That tells me that there is not a
problem with the template itself.

If someone has an update on this, I'd love to hear it because I use
this template quite a few times every day and having to copy
everything over to a new instance about every 10th to 20th time I do
this is a pain!

Here's hoping that Terry, Suzanne, Herb, Jay or one of the other folks
who are kind enough to volunteer time to answer questions here have
some new ideas or information on this. None of the various patches or
service packs has made any difference, although when I kicked the RAM
up to 1.5 GB ( XP Pro ) it seemed to reduce the frequency of the
problem.

Okay, so I am still trying to figure out this issue. Here is what I have
realized so far.

If I go into excel and copy the cells of the sheet and then open word and
chosse paste/paste special it will paste and I can edit it within word as
well. And every time after I do that, if I am still in the same document, if
I go to insert/table/excel spreadsheet, it will then work but if I close out
the doc and open a new one and try to insert/table/excel spreadsheet, it will
not. It is like word is trying to open excel 03 through dde or whatever
instead of excel 07. I assume this because if I also install excel 03 along
side excel 07 it works fine from within word insert/table/excel spreadsheet.
So I need someone to help me figure out either in the registry or wherever to
tell word to look for the excel 07 program instead of excel 03. Or something
else but this is what I am assuming. Any ideas????
