inserting a jpeg into the header causes spinner pinwheel

Has anyone experience Word 2004 hanging with forever
spinning pinwheel when a picture is inserted into the
header of Word Document. I have a single page document
that will cause Word to repeatedly hang when a picture is
inserted. Is this an OS issue or Word. I have not had
any other issues with my applications hanging like this.
Only the newest version of Word. I'm using OS 10.2.8.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Perry:

That's a long-standing Word bug that first appeared in Word 97 on the PC.

If a graphic is the very first character in the first header of a document,
Word will sometimes corrupt the header store and hang.

To rescue the document, copy all except the very last paragraph mark to a
new document: that gets rid of the corruption.

Now, avoid tables in headers or footers, and if you want a graphic in there,
make sure you have at least one character of text before the graphic (a
single space will do).

In later versions of Word, this is not so important: normally you will get
away with it. So if you just fix that document, chances are it will be OK
in future.

cheers

If its a such a long standing bug in Word why hasn't it been fixed?
Is it so complicated to fix. Or just considered an annoyance by the big
wigs at MS?

In order for an image (to be used as a Logo) to be centerd correctly
would require a Character a return, insert Image then center. Throws off
the size of the header. A Standrd size header in a business letter
usually (in the US) is no more than 2" down from edge of the top of the
page. In some cases that size would drop down an additional amount. This
includes the Logo and all the Mailing address.

Depending upon, size of font could make an 1/8 to 1/4' difference.

If it's "fixed", don't "break it"!

Phillip:

Why hasn't it been fixed? It has: but the fix was not perfect. In Word 97,
it would crash Word every time. Now, you will get it only very
occasionally, usually when you have applied several edits with tracked
changes on to a graphic or table in the very first header in the document.

In the meantime, use a space and a centred tab to do what you want. In
other words, space, tab, insert picture, and set the Format to Inline with
Text.

The centred tab will centre the picture regardless of the presence of the
space. You don't need the return.

Or space, insert picture, leave it floating and use the picture properties
to centre it, you then don't need the tab.
