inserting a non automatic page inside a document

I asked this on another section and realize it should be
here. I was wondering if any one new a way to insert a page
number in a document that's not in the header it needs to
be put in a different spot. It also needs to be non
autoupdating. It would be perfect if there was some type of
look up command(like in excel). Basically i am trying to
program a macro that will go through a very long document
and insert the page numbers only once, without having to
phsically type it into each page. I tried to use
cross-reference with no luck. Am i crazy or is this
possible? Please Help.
