inserting accent mark above a letter

Rachel

Hi! Is there a way to place an accent mark above a letter of a word without the accent mark replacing the letter? I am using Word to type up some notes from my foreign language textbook. Basically, I have words in English and their Russian translations. For the Russian words, I would like to put an accent mark above the letter of the word where I need to place stress when pronouncing it.

I am using Word (from Office XP) on Windows 2000 Pro. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Rachel

If you use one of the unicode fonts in Word (eg Arial, or TNR) then look at
the expanded character set under the cyrillic section via Insert > symbol,
you can see what key shortcuts are applied to accented characters.

If that doesn't work for you (Cyrillic isn't all that well-endowed with
inflected glyphs) you can create tiny textboxes containing the accent mark
(no border, no internal margin, lock anchor), positioned over the character
in question. Do this last, after you've done ALL other formatting. It will
still be damned tedious.

Or, if you have much of it to do, borrow a copy of CorelDraw or similar and
create your own font.

Hi Graham, I tried your suggestion, but when I go into Insert > Symbol and select Cyrillic from the Subset field, it does display the letters of the Russian alphabet, but I am limited to one or two letters that already have accent marks above them. For my purposes, I need to be able to put an accent mark above any letter of the Russian alphabet (without the insertion of that accent mark replacing the letter). Please post again if you have any further thoughts.

Thanks,
Rachel

Hi Jezebel, I'd like to try your suggestion, but I'm not familiar with using textboxes or what they are. Can you give me a quick step-by-step on what I should do to get those accent marks above Russian words by using textboxes. Thanks so much!

You could investigate the EQ field which will allow you to place one
character above another eg
e{ EQ \d \fo-9 (`) } would put the ` character above the 'e' .
You may need to juggle with the font format of '`' Raising it by 2 points
should do the trick. You can save the resulting field as an autotext entry
or formatted autocorrect entry for ease of insertion.

Create a textbox by clicking the Textbbox button on the Draw menu, then
click and drag within the document (don't worry about the size at this
stage). Type the accent character you want inside the box.

Right-click the edge of the textbox and select Format Textbox from the popup
menu. Allow yourself some time to experiment: work your way through the
tabs and get familiar with all the settings. In particular, make sure you
understand the layout tab and the options under the 'Advanced' button.

Presumably you only need a few of these accent characters: you can create
the textbox as you need it then define it as an AutoText entry. Then you can
insert the accent with a single keystroke.

Hi,

For the Russian words, I would like to put an accent mark above the letter of the word where I need to place stress when pronouncing it.

I am using Word (from Office XP) on Windows 2000 Pro. Any help is appreciated.

Stress mark is not part of Russian _alphabet_ and is used only
in education texts, thus MS Word does not provide any facilities for it.
But Russian programmers created some Word _macros_ that let you use
such stress mark. See package "Perestrojka"
(I never tried it myself but others did) -
as you will see it's even listed on Microsoft Office Support page:
http://calends.50free.net/rb.html

Another variant is to use an 'accent' symbol along with Russian,
but it has some visual problems (not exactly above the letter, plus
Times new Roman problems and copying to a browser), you can look
at the instruction here, in my discussion with Klaus:

I know this is an old post, but anyone needing the infor now might
benefit. I know of two ways to insert the accent mark. 1 Type the
word incorrectly and then right click to use spell check and it should
give you the option with an accent mark. 2 Hold down control, hit the
accent mark and then type the letter you want the mark over.
