inserting an equation in word 2007

hello everyone,
I have just switched to 2007. I am writing a manuscript and I see the icon
for inserting an equation is greyed out. However, when I open any new word
document I am able to insert equations but not in the document where I am
writing the manuscript. I tried writing the equation in a new document and
then pasting in the manuscript document, but it is pasting as an object which
I definitely do not like.

What is causing this? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Sanjib

Since the existing document was presumably created in an earlier version, it
will be opening in Compatibility Mode. If you resave it in Word 2007 format,
you should have access to all Word 2007 features.
