Inserting autotext to a footer

When I insert the autotext of the path\file name of a document saved
on my server in the footer and print it out, it prints out as
"\\servername\foldername\filename.doc". If I close the document and
reopen it, the footer prints as "p:\filename.doc". Why does it print
differently and how can I get it to print the short path of
"p:\filename.doc" without closing the document. We're saving the
documment to NT server using Word97.
