inserting columns and rows

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

When I try to insert a new column or row I receive an error message saying that it is "impossible to place objects outside of the sheet". (This is roughly translated as I have MS Office 2008 French student/family version. Is this a limitation of the student/family version or am I doing something wrong. I followed the step by step instructions from this site on how to insert/delete rows and columns but with no luck. Thanks.

There is no difference between Home/Student & any other edition. The message
means exactly what it says :) Regardless of whether you realize it & even
if you can't see it, there is content of some type occupying space at the
right edge and/or bottom edge of the sheet.

Just to clarify, those commands do not *add* any rows or columns, It removes
them from the corresponding edge & sticks them where you're asking for them
to be. It can't do that if there is any content at the edge ‹ either in
cells or objects floating on the surface.

One of the most common causes is pasting content copied from other files ‹
particularly web pages ‹ where you really have no idea what all is actually
being copied. Junk can get flung all over the place.

Either clear those areas or copy just the actual content of the sheet &
paste to a new sheet. If the problem persists include OS X & Office update
levels along with as much additional detail as you can supply.

Thank you CyberTaz for your quick and helpful response. In fact, the Excel sheet that is (was) causing me problems was downloaded from First Class where my professor had posted the Excel sheet for the students to fill in according to the class requirements - so there me be content on the sheet that I am not aware of.
