Inserting cross-references as hyperlinks

I am using cross-reference hyperlinks at the beginning of
word documents, and as a navagational tool within the
guides. Sometimes when I add the links it also pulls in
phantom text that is greyed in after the link. The text
that appears is actually the paragraph that occurs after
the heading that I have inserted as the hyperlinked cross-
reference. Has anyone else seen this problem, or know how
to fix it? We are seeing it happen in more than one of our
guides. Thanks for any help!

Susan,

please explain the method you are using to insert your
cross-references. They can be inserted from the menu, and
manually inserted as fields. Also, you might mention your
operating system version and Word versions.

Thanks for the reply. We are using Word 2000 sp3 and
Windows 2000 sp3.

We are using the menu to insert the cross-references. We
are inserting them as referenct type = heading and
inserting them as heading text as a hyperlink.

The phantom text doesn't appear in all the cross-
references that we insert, and I can't find anything about
troubleshoting this in the Word help.

Hi,

I think the issue is that your text has been edited. When
you insert the cross reference - behind the scenes a
bookmark is placed around the text. If a user ends up
editing stuff inside the bookmark, this will be reflected
in the cross reference.

This drove us nuts for ages until we figured out what was
happening. To check if this is the case with your
documents go to tools options and view the bookmarks -
that way you will be able to see the text they include.
