Inserting filename in header/footer

I would like to insert the filename in a footer that appears in a new
file. From a template letter, I want to save the template under a new
filename and have that new filename appear in the footer. The template
filename I inserted in the footer stays the same in the new file
footer. Hope I presented this well.
Thanks, Mark

In your template document, go to View>Header and Footer. From the Header and

Footer toolbar, click on Autotext and select Filename or Filename and Path.

A new document will automatically have that document's name in that place -

but this is going to be a rather dull 'document1' or the like. Once you've

saved the document with the name you want, right click on the file name

field and select Update field codes to show the new file name. Then save

again, of course.

It is not possible to get fields to update automatically when a document is
saved. In earlier versions of Word, fields were updated when a document was
opened, but since Word XP this is not the case 'by design'. This is a source
of annoyance to many people, and I would include myself in that.

The following link is Microsoft's answer to the issue and describes how to
make your documents update when opened:
