Inserting footer generates error and shuts down Word 2000.

More and more often Word generates an error and shuts down when I try to
insert text or Autotext (filename) into the footer of a document. Why is
this happening? Is there a fix?

I am using Word 2000 Professional. This happens when I view the
header/footer and insert autotext (filename) using the autotext entires menu.
It also happens when I use the View Footer menu button and type in the
footer info.

I suspect a corrupt normal.dot. Try renaming normal.dot and see if the
problem goes away. If this fixes your problem but you have customizations
stored in normal.dot that you want to save, write back for help in
transferring the customizations.
