inserting footnotes

I have just begun using this program and am really enjoying it. However, the
format is very different from word and can be frustrating. I read previously
a suggestion of changing the auto correct for "ss" to insert the section
symbol, which is an interesting work-around, but not quite the solution I'm
sure many other students are looking forward to, as opposed to shortcut keys.
(hopefully a future update will bring about some changes). My other concern
is footnotes. Word allows for the insert funtion, and it is a fantastic tool
for note-taking both in and out of class. Is it possible to insert a
footnote without having to manually insert a separate text field? Like so
many other work arounds, the stop and delay can get unnerving when a train of
thought is in progress.

Automated footnote support is not available in OneNote 2003; Can you
describe an example of where inserting a footnote might be used? If I
remember correctly, you were asking some questions about taking notes in
a Law class, so this might be some useful feedback for the OneNote
product from MS who lurk here...

You mention that the "ss" workaround might not work for you. Can you
explain why? If you're going to press 2 (or more) keys anyway for a
shortcut key, why wouldn't the AutoCorrect feature work? Your hands
don't even have to leave the HOME position for this ;)

You were right about the "ss" auto correct options... it just takes getting
used to I guess. (The universal functionality of the short cut keys would
still be an attractive feature so all office products can operate with the
same familiarity.)
For the footnotes, moreso for homework than notes in class, I've found that
the organizational benefits of locating definitions right at the bottom of
the pages you are working on/reading off of is a great thing. For note
taking in class, while you may not have the time to fill in the footnote
information, you do have a difinitive reminder in the body of text that
something is important, which is also readily seen at the bottom of the page
at a quick glance to insure that you have revisited the material thoroughly
(if the footnotes are filled in/not filled in).

An idea: Instead of worrying about footnotes, start your note taking in some
from the left margin. Then, when you need to make what would normally be a
footnote, click in the blank space to the left and put your note there. You
still then have the ability to see at a glance what is filled in and what
isn't. (I have even known people to take this one step further and set up a
specific flag for these notes. With this addition, you can run a summary on
that flag and see all of your items to complete at once.)

I'm also a student, and think that's a good idea, except that I think
it make it a little cumbersome if you come back to add more information
later. That is, if you add something above the note in the left margin,
it gets out of sync. Unless there's some way to attach a text box to a
particular paragraph?

I have a question about setting auto correct for the section symbol.
How do you set that up? I've tried copying and pasting the section
symbol into auto correct options but that won't work.
Thanks,

Jamie

After you copy from the Character Map (you have to "Select" the character
from the grid, then click "Copy" to place it on the Clipboard), then paste
it into OneNote using Ctrl-V (which is the standard KB shortcut for Paste)

Alternatively, you can look in the lower right corner of the status bar in
Character Map, which shows the extended KB shortcut for the character
selected in the grid. You can use this (hold down the Alt button and type
0187 using the numeric keypad) in the Autocorrect options instead of
pasting.

its not all that bad... try inserting the section or any other symbol on the
note page itself, then highlight and copy, go to the autocorrect options and
enter "ss" or whatever you chose, in the to-be-corrected field, tab and paste
the symbol directy in the substitute field. It works pretty well, just
something else to get used to.

Thanks Erik. I was trying to use right click to paste and that wasn't
working. Ctrl + V did work.
