Inserting graphics into document from file at print stage.

I wonder if it's possible to arrange for graphic items, which are saved
elsewhere than in the document itself, to be referred to in a document so
that, when the document is printed, those items are accessed, as it were "on
the fly", (visible in Print Preview although not in Print Layout View).

I'm trying to find a way to produce a document which will contain a large
proportion of illustrative material which can be opened reasonably quickly
and also will enable me to move the placing of the illustrations around
until I'm satisfied with the layout.

Many thanks,

David.

Hi David,

See if checking the Picture placeholders box under Tools>Options>View does
what you want. You will need to uncheck it to print/preview however.

Thanks, Doug, for that.

It's not exactly what I had in mind - I was looking for something like the
BASIC "call" command, which could be inserted in the document and the
graphics files only opened when the document is being printed.
My old Protext (Dos) word processor could do it!

The workaround does work, of course, and I'm grateful for the advice.

Another thought: If you link your pictures, you could show the field
code while you are working and only show the pictures themselves on
paper. With the side effect that you can easily update them if the
original file has changed or rearrange the picture paths.

One caveat: Folks are sometimes approaching insanity while trying to get
the grips with Word and linked stuff. Works best if you keep the
pictures in the same or subfolder than where the DOC file is.
