Inserting hyperlink issue

Hi,

I have a problem with 2 of my office PCs running Office 2003 SP3.

All of our users use a network share to store their files, and work directly
from there. On two of the PCs, when the user has a file opened from the
Network share, if they go to Insert - Hyperlink, it takes up to 3 minutes to
open the dialog and list the contents of the folder (defaults to the folder
that the document was opened from). This folder only contains around 100
files.

On all other PCs running the same version of Office, this folder lists in
less than a second. I've tried the obvious like changing virus scanning
options, even uninstalling it on one of the PCs, but nothing has made a
difference.

Has anyone encountered this sort of thing before? Browsing the folders using
File - Open is still quick, it's just when doing it in the Hyperlink dialog.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks; will give that a go shortly. However, both of the test PCs I have
this problem with are fresh builds and so haven't done a lot of browsing...

There are no unavailable mapped drives; the only mapped drive on the system
is the one mapped to the network share in use in this instance.

A couple of additional ideas:

- Is the default printer a network printer? If so, is the printer driver on
the PC or on the network? If on the network try installing the printer
driver locally. I realize this may not appear to have anything to do with
hyperlinks, however Word will query the printer driver in various tasks
(such as when accessing the Open dialog box) and the Hyperlinks dialog box
could be doing the same.

- You mentioned "disable the virus scanner". What virus scanner is
installed? If Norton then disabling it (and even uninstalling it) will not
disable the Office Plug-in which is known to cause delays when working with
Office documents. To disable the Office Plug-in, in Norton Options you'll
find it in the Miscellaneous section.

There are no printers installed on the system; I've been trying to keep it as
clean as possible to eliminate potential causes.

The Virus scanning is Sophos; I've both disabled it, and added exclusions to
tell it to never scan the mapped drive in use. I can't find any reference to
an office plug-in with Sophos, but had seen the Norton one elsewhere.
