Inserting images doesn't work!

No need to delete it even if you could:), but Compatibility Mode isn't the
issue.

It took a while for me to fully recall, but it's actually a confilict with
the Styles section in the Formatting Palette. It's in the process of being
resolved, but in the meantime just make sure the Styles section is collapsed
or that you hide the Formatting Palette before attempting to insert a
picture.

Whatever type of image file format i try to insert in a Word 2008 document, i get this message: "This application cannot open this file. This file is an unsupported graphic format or may be damaged. Try opening the graphic in another application."

Since there is nothing wrong with the files, I can only assume that Word no longer supports any of the world's 10 most used file formats for graphics.

Prove me wrong, PLEASE!

So I see! I'm not sure whether the Prefs issue is invalid, though... There
may be more than just the one contributor to the flag. Have you had any
confirmation that Prefs would *not* be involved?

Thanks! For some reason it is not possible to insert images in compatibility mode, but it worked when I re-saved as docx. Can I erase my question now that the problem is solved?

OK, I guess that makes *some* sense - but whodathunk having the Styles pane
displayed would interfere with inserting pictures in the first place?%>}

Thanks for that--I got totally confused over the several threads, but
have now updated the Word 2008 issues page. :)

Vague memory that someone else said deleting prefs only worked for one
picture, as then as soon as you tried to add another 32-bit picture, you
got the error again. I think. I kinda made up that 32-bit part--it was
definitely something about the picture format. I didn't really
understand it.

Also, Jason Andersen was very surprised to hear corrupt prefs could be
causing this, while certainly fresh prefs would be one way of collapsing
the Styles pane in the FP.

My vote is to leave it like it is... at least for now. If anything I would
think we may find some correlation with the purported memory leak syndrome,
but it seems that the Prefs really aren't the cause & deleting them provides
only a temporary fix. Not to mention that folks will quickly tire of
repeatedly having to reset their prefs for the sake of every picture... that
would get old *real* fast.

Good point. Should I put it back, do you think? Feel free to just tell
me what to put there, because you've certainly been paying more
attention than me. :)
