Inserting jpeg into header gives spinning pinwheel

Has any experienced a problem with Word 2004 when
inserting pictures into the header area of a document? I
have a one page document with two small jpegs that when
inserted cause the spinning pinwheel on the Mac to run
forever! I've never seen this in the past. It will
repeat everytime I try it. Is this related to a problem
with word or the OS. I'm using OS 10.2.8. I have had no
problems like this on any other application. Any have
any ideas.
