Inserting macrons

Is it possible to place macrons, that is marks directly above vowels to
indicate whether they are long or short? I tried Insert>Symbol, to no
avail, and superscript won't cut it. Is there a setting, preference, or
download, possibly for teachers, that may solve my problem?

You can roll your own. It looks like a lot of work, but it shouldn't
take more than a few minutes and will then work automatically. The key
is to make the macron an autocorrect item. See

FWIW, you could have found this yourself if you searched the archives:

(bookmark it in your browser) using "macron" as a search string.
