There are several options here

BATCH IMPORT images into PowerPoint

Most of it's PC-oriented, but there are links to our own Jim Gordon's batch
image importer (Jim ... is it happy under 2008?)

There's also some VBA code for the Do It Yourself types, but don't spend any
time on that. 2008 no longer has VBA, so it'd be of no use to you. A pity.

If you're an AppleScripter, you might be able to use the logic and PPT-specific
stuff there and adapt it.

As Steve pointed out, there are some ways using Visual Basic for
Applications (VBA), which works in all recent versions of PowerPoint up to
and including PowerPoint 2004.

Microsoft discontinued VBA in Office 2008, so the add-ins will not work. You
would need to create your own AppleScript to accomplish this in PowerPoint
2008.
