Inserting objects (Microsoft Equation 3.0)

In MS-Word 97, when I try to insert an equation I get this
error message: "The server application, source file or
item cannot be found. Make sure the application is
properly installed, and that it has not been deleted,
moved, or renamed." I checked and found the 'Equation'
files are all present under 'C:\Program Files' and the
Equation Editor executable starts and runs fine on its
own. I even re-installed the Equation Editor, and that
didn't help. I also tried (under 'Tools\Options\File
Locations' to direct Word to look for 'Tools' in the
directory where the 'Equation' files are located
(C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared) and that
didn't help either.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks,

I've never used Norton anti-virus; I do have 'Trend
PC-Cillin'. I tried disabling it (as suggested by Suzanne
for Norton) but still got the same response in Word when I
tried to insert an equation using 'MS Equation 3.0'.

Any other ideas on how to get Word to find the equation editor?
