inserting page numbers and problems with indenting paragraphs

I am using Microsoft Works Version 6.0 and am working on a
document I imported from an older programme of Word. I
imported it into Works in the hope it would solve a
problem I'd been having but it hasn't.

PROBLEM #1: When I indent a paragraph, which has been
italisized and bolded, a "border" appears - usually at top
and bottom of indented paragraph. It is almost impossible
to delete or move and even when I do delete it will often
pop up somewhere else on the page. It also appears in a
print out of the document. It appears to be a part of
possibly "formatting"? That is, it is not just text as it
is so hard to manipulate and control.

PROBLEM #2: When I attempt to insert page numbers into my
document, a number '2' appears at the point of the cursor.
And no page numbers are inserted.

Am feeling concerned as I have a thesis due in few days
and would really appreciate some help,
