inserting page numbers

Some "improvements" really aren't.

Now that I have Office 2007 I cannot insert page numbers like I used to. It
calls up a distracting header and footer area and asks me to jump through
hoops that confuse me.

Can't I just do what I did with the older version of Word: simply hit
INSERT, align the page right or left and check the box that says SHOW NUMBER
ON FIRST PAGE

Why can't it be that easy? Why'd they take away this feature and make the
new way so much more complicated?

I'm not sure where you're looking, but if you use Insert | Page Number, you
get a choice of Top of Page and Bottom of Page, either of which opens a
gallery of choices. The first three in the gallery are Plain Numbers, left,
center, and right. That seems pretty straightforward to me.

Or if you just want a page number field, click "Current Position" and choose
from the choices there.

Check the "Different first page" box in the Options group on the Header &
Footer Tools Design tab and omit the page number from the First Page
Header/Footer.
