Inserting Page numbers

L

Liza

My thesis paper needs roman numerals starting on page three to six. Then I
need page number starting on bottom of the first page of the chapter
one....after that the page number goes on the top right hand corner. Then
beginning chapter two the page number again goes on the bottom center...than
goes back upt to the right hand corner until the beginning of chapter three.
The beginning of chapter three the page number goes on the bottom center and
then back up to the right hand corner until chapter four etc...etc... I know
its very confusing.

Not confusing. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NumberingFrontMatter.htm for basic
principles.

Insert a next-page section break between pages 2 and 3. Insert another
next-page section break between pages 6 and 7. Insert next-page section
breaks between chapters. Turn off "same as previous" or "link to
previous" (depends on what version of Word you have, which you don't
say) in the headers and footers of sections 2 and 3.

Section 1 will have no page numbers in the header or footer.

Insert a page number field in the header or footer of section 2, choose
roman number format, and choose to either start page numbering at i or
continue page numbering from the previous section (you don't say whether
the first roman-numbered page should be numbered i or iii).

Section 3 and subsequent sections will hold your chapters. In section 3
(your chapter 1), choose "different first page" headers and footers in
Page Setup | Layout, and choose to apply to "this point forward".
Insert a page number field into the first-page footer on page 1 in
section 3, and choose to start page numbering at 1 (I'm guessing that's
what you want, although you don't say). Insert a page number field into
the header on page 2 in section 3. Section 4 (your chapter 2) and
subsequent sections should automatically adopt the section 3 page
numbering setup.
